WORKING IN A HOTEL?
Hello everyone! Today, we’re going to talk about some things that there are in hotel rooms, like “bed” and “pillow” for example. It seems a little complicated for those who work in hotels to memorize all vocabulary due to several things inside a room, a fitness center or a front desk… but don’t worry about it! Here, I’ll give you some easy words to help you with this. In each post, I’m going to explain a little part from this specific English vocabulary ok?
Let’s start with a hotel room as I said before. The things we can see at first are: a bed, a wardrobe, a dresser, a mirror and a lamp but there are more things to learn! Let’s see? Look at the words below with their explanation:
A bed: It’s a piece of furniture where people sleep – “She goes to bed at 11:00 PM every night.”
A wardrobe: It’s also a piece of furniture where people keep their clothes – “Keep you jacket in the wardrobe, please.”
A dresser: It’s a piece of furniture where people keep things like combs, brushes, make ups… or clothes – “I can’t find my hairbrush in the dresser!”.
A mirror: It’s a kind of glass where we can see our reflective image – “He likes to look in the mirror before going to work.”
A lamp: It’s an object with a light (bulb) in it, usually on a desk or nightstand – “Turn on the lamp, please.”
An air conditioner: It’s an electronic apparatus which provides fresh (or cold) air in the room – “Don’t turn the air conditioner off, please.”
A control panel: It’s a place to control (turn on/ off) the apparatus in a room like an air conditioner or TV – “Did you check the control panel? It’s too hot here!”
A remote control: It’s a small object that can be used in televisions, CD players, air conditioners or other apparatus so that people can turn on (or off) them or control them – “Where’s the remote control? I want to change this channel.”
An electronic safe (or a safety deposit box): It’s a place where people keep their documents, money and other belongings – “I need my password to open the electronic safe.”
A minibar: It’s a kind of a small refrigerator used to keep food and drinks in a room – “What’s in the minibar? I want to have some soft drink.”
An adaptor: It’s a small object used in electricity that enables an electrical plug to be used in a socket (or sockets) to turn on/ off the equipment – “She needs an adaptor to turn on the TV, the lamp and the CD player, there’s just one outlet here.”
Remember that for a good learning you have to practice your English regularly reading books, magazines or articles in this language, mainly if they’re about your career, because you’ll find a specific vocabulary you need there. Taking specific courses also can help you a lot but always research new words from good dictionaries or from reliable websites on their on.
